It’s time for our second entry into our June is Audiobook Month event, Hear the Talk, sponsored by Tantor Audio. Today it’s Hear the Narrators Talk – a recorded chat with narrators Kaleo Griffith, Xe Sands, Angela Dawe, and Karen White. We’re discussing various aspects of narrating including relationships with authors and the joys and challenges of narrating romance.
Earlier this week we featured Hear the Authors Talk with authors Pamela Clare, Jennifer Ashley, Anne Stuart, and Julie James. Four additional recorded chats are scheduled for the next two weeks.
Today’s online discussion was recorded as those massive storms continued to move through Oklahoma (my home) which made recording sketchy at times (and required editing of my comments at a later date) but the “heart” of the conversation remains despite some unavoidable variances in audio quality.
You may download any of our chats easily to your MP3 player. Or, you can listen on your phone directly from AudioGals. I listened to the entire Hear the Authors Talk in my car as I ran errands and didn’t even need earbuds!
My thanks to our narrators today and a special thanks to our behind-the-scenes tech Gal, Brenda, who recorded and edited this chat. There wouldn’t be an AudioGals without her!

Loved listening to this segment – it was so fun! I totally agree with what the narrator’s said about providing an additional layer to an author’s work – giving us the benefit of their interpretation.
As an example, unbelievably I’ve read some reviews on JD Robb’s (Nora Roberts) In Death series where they felt Eve was unlikable – especially in book 1. I came into the series with the audio and thankfully, book 1 was many books into the audio production so Ms. Ericksen had her fabulous voices down by that point. I thought she was able to convey Eve’s comments and reactions in a way that showed her as emotionally vulnerable/self deprecating but if read in a certain frame of mind may come across cold/unfeeling. It’s that type of thing that can take a good book and make it a better experience.
I’ve just finished 2 marathon listens with Ms. Dawe on the Psy/Changling series because I had to be ready for the new book and then it was so good, I had to revisit again with the knowledge of who the ghost was and how we got hints along the way! I really enjoyed that (with the exception of reading emails… and I have no real suggestion on how to make THAT better!)
I don’t know if romance listeners are more stalker-ish towards our favorite narrators or if all audio-a-holics are about the same. Thanks so much for all your hard work to prepare for recording our favorite books!
Vic! Wasn’t it fun to learn who the Ghost was? She had me guessing! Glad you’re enjoying the series!
This is great fun and always so informative to hear narrators talk about the work! Thanks all! Well done!
Was an honor to chat with my fabulous colleagues and the lovely Gals! Thanks so much for having us on, and presenting this program.
And thanks for all you do for audiobooks in general. You often inspire me!
Such a wonderful discussion! Thank you to all of the narrators and to the wonderful Audio Gals!!
This was fantastic! I just shared the link.
Thanks, AudioGals and Tantor Audio!
Great interview! So fun to get to know everyone better and hear about the process and the challenges and pleasures of the narration job.
Thank you to everyone involved for such interesting, thoughtful interviews. I now have a much deeper understanding and appreciation for what goes into, and along with, the narration of an audiobook, and look forward to hearing more from you all!
Thanks so much to AudioGals and to the listeners! It was an honor to be interviewed. Hooray for audiobooks!
