The Home Court Advantage by N.M. Silber

The Home Court AdvantageNarrated by Tavia Gilbert

The Home Court Advantage is book 2 in the Lawyers in Love series, and is the sequel to The Law of Attraction, Book 1, in the sense that it’s the exact same protagonists and a continuation of the same plot, like New Adult series often do. But this ain’t no New Adult angst! It’s funny as hell. Gabrielle and Braden are both lawyers but on the opposite sides of the courtroom, where Gabrielle is a Public Defender and Braden an ADA. In the first book, they had been working together a few months when they finally got the courage to go out together, and the chemistry took over. When Gabrielle started receiving threatening notes about the relationship, she went all Lucy Ricardo, and hatched up a scheme to find out which of Braden’s relatives and/or ex-girlfriends was the perpetrator by getting handwriting samples from each of the ones she suspected. At the end of book 1, she had not found the person who wrote the notes, but she has got her man: she and Braden became engaged.

In this story, she is still feeling like she’s being followed, in spite of being with Braden almost all the time, and having a guard Chihuahua named Bruno. She is also having just as many whacky court cases, with Braden and his other ADA friends as opposing counsel. At some point she decides the stalker is a conspiracy theorist, so she signs up to take all of their friends to a local conspiracy theorist meetup for the weekend, which is just as crazy as it sounds and funny too! The stalker shows – but not as a guest at the convention – and they lose him. Meanwhile, Braden has finally proposed and during the wedding prep, they uncover the truth about the stalker.

It’s really so funny, I found myself laughing out loud all throughout when I read it in print, including during some of the really steamy, graphic sex scenes. And when Tavia Gilbert started narrating, I sighed a huge sigh of relief – having just come off a mediocre narration, it was such a joy again to hear a wonderfully skilled and talented narrator take on this immensely enjoyable tale! Tavia’s pacing is natural perfection – the story is written in 1st person, and Tavia becomes Gabrielle, as she narrates the whacky tales in the courtroom and in the bedroom and in the paranormal conference in the woods! She carried forward her same wonderfully differentiated characters from The Law of Attraction – roommate Jessica with her rounded vowels, and Braden’s younger brother Drew’s bratty sarcasm. She also got to do some New Jersey and New York accents that seemed spot on – really, the whole package was terrific, including the steamy, graphic sex scenes, which were read extremely well. Highly recommended for contemporary romance/big city setting enthusiasts.
