Being a huge fan of Alessandra Torre’s twisty, suspenseful romances, I was curious to see how she would tackle a more mainstream romance like Hollywood Dirt. Well, I’m pleased to say that lovers of feel-good romances will enjoy this sweet, country tale of a big shot Hollywood actor finding unexpected healing with a country gal who also had fallen a victim to a bad set of circumstances. Moreover, the authentic sounding Southern twang of Rachel Hirsch’s slow styled country charm helps bring this romance adeptly to life.
Cole Masten is Hollywood gold, but his fame has come at a price. The woman he thought would be the love of his life forever turned out to be much more interested in using him to gain her rising stardom.
His next movie project – a project near and dear to his heart as he came up with the idea to make a movie out of a southern town that was built by the Coca Cola millionaires – takes him to the small town of Quincy, Georgia.
With his personal assistant hospitalized due to an accident, Cole is left to navigate the idiosyncrasies of Quincy practically all on his own (imagine that, a superstar fending for himself!). Further complicating matters the female lead cast for the movie is threatening to quit before filming has even started.
Fortunately for Cole that’s when he stumbles upon Summer Jenkins, a woman who both infuriates and fascinates him. She is perfect for the role, even if she is the only woman in the world who his charm and superstardom seems to appear irrelevant to. In fact, she downright seems to have a visceral angry reaction to him because of, not just in spite, of his fame.
Can this odd couple’s heat-filled encounters turn into Hollywood box office success both on and off the screen?
This was my first experience with Rachel Hirsch. Ms. Hirsch has a very distinctive sound and I have to admit it took a little bit to grow on me due to the pronounced Southern twang and slow cadence. However, once I settled into the story, I think Ms. Hirsch recreated the feel of the setting that Ms. Torre penned perfectly.
Ms. Hirsch also did a good job bringing the emotion to the surface of her performance and providing differentiated voices for each character. She was also able to provide a non-accented, almost aloof sounding voice for Cole which fit his superstar persona to a T.
All in all, I thought Hollywood Dirt was a cute, hope-filled tale, perfect for anyone looking for a lighthearted, contemporary romance. The narration by Ms. Hirsch framed the mood of this story perfectly.
