Our October 2019 Picks

The Gals are back with our monthly look at the new and upcoming releases we’re most looking forward to listening to over the next few weeks. There’s some good stuff coming up in October, including not one, but TWO new audiobooks from KJ Charles, new recordings of a back-list series by Annabeth Albert and some fabulous new books in a variety of genres in the mix. We’re sure there are some great listens in here – and don’t forget to drop by to tell us which audiobooks YOU can’t wait to get your grabby hands (and ears!) on this month!

Treble Maker by Annabeth AlbertTreble Maker by Annabeth Albert

Narrated by Brad King

The audiobooks of Ms. Albert’s most recent titles, published by Harlequin Audio, have had some fantastic narrators; this series has been picked up by Tantor which doesn’t have the greatest track record in that department, so I’m including this “pick” as a cautious “let’s see”. I’ve listened to the audio sample of the narrator and it doesn’t sound too bad, so fingers crossed! – Caz

You can be my guinea pig Caz! If Mr. King is good I’ll be all over this one. – Kaetrin

Orientation by Gregory AsheOrientation by Gregory Ashe

Narrated by Charlie David

Gregory Ashe’s brand of angsty romantic suspense featuring complex, flawed characters and intricately constructed, twisty-turny mysteries has been my big discovery of the last year or so, and I loved this, the first in his Borealis Investigations series when I read it earlier this year. Two friends since college (who’ve secretly yearned – and there’s some serious yearning going on here! – for each other for years) run a detective agency that’s hit a rough patch when they pick up a case of blackmail and murder which is going to lead to some big changes in their relationship. Charlie David is an experienced narrator – I’ve listened to him a couple of times and have enjoyed his work – so I’m really looking forward to this one! – Caz

This Earl of Mine by Kate BatemanThis Earl of Mine by Kate Bateman

Narrated by Beverley A. Crick

I’ve really enjoyed the books I’ve read by this author, and am pleased to see her latest title being made available in audio format with the ever-reliable Beverly A. Crick is at the microphone. It’s the story of an heiress who decides the best way to avoid being trapped into marriage is to marry a condemned man, but we all know what happens to the best laid plans… – Caz

Any Old Diamonds by KJ CharlesAny Old Diamonds by K.J. Charles

Narrated by Cornell Collins

With the release of the sequel – Gilded Cage – planned later this month, the release of Any Old Diamonds in audio is a good opportunity to remind myself of that story, wherein a duke’s son engages a notorious thief to steal a valuable necklace. It’s clever, sharp and funny – well, it’s KJ Charles, so that’s to be expected! – and I’m sure Cornell Collins will do a great job with the narration. – Caz

Proper English by KJ CharlesProper English by K.J. Charles

Narrated by Bella Lowe

Proper English is a prequel to one of KJ Charles’ most beloved books, Think of England, and features two of its secondary characters, Pat and Fen. By the time of ToE, the two ladies are obviously a force to be reckoned with (and obviously, though quietly, a couple) and this is their origin story. I’m not familiar with the narrator, so fingers crossed. – Caz

I read this in print when it was released earlier this year, and I absolutely loved it. Charles has created a perfect blend of romance and mystery. Plus, the leads are so incredibly charming and relatable. I’m not familiar with Bella Lowe as a narrator, but I’m hoping she’ll do the story justice. – Shannon

The Shape of Night by Tess GerritsenThe Shape of Night by Tess Gerritsen

Narrated by Hillary Huber

October is the perfect time to curl up with a scary book, and while ghosty stories aren’t always something I get excited about, I’m willing to give this latest romantic suspense title a chance. I’ve been a huge fan of both Gerritsen’s writing and Huber’s narrations for years now, so I’m pretty excited about this one. – Shannon

Peace, Blood and Understanding by Molly HarperPeace, Blood, and Understanding by Molly Harper

Narrated by Amanda Ronconi

The next book in the Half-Moon Hollow series is releasing in October just in time for Halloween, and it’s in the Audible Escape package.  I can’t wait to listen! – BJ

American Love Story by Adriana HerreraAmerican Love Story by Adriana Herrera

Narrated by Sean Crisden

I read an advance copy of this book and it’s terrific; a wonderful, thoughtful and sexy story about two characters whose intense chemistry draws them together over and over again despite the fact that they come from completely different worlds. Sean Crisden did a great job with the previous books in the series, and I can’t wait to hear him in this one. – Caz

I’m keen to give this one a try too, as I’ve heard great things about this author, the narrator is good and Caz loved the book. I feel like I’m in safe hands. – Kaetrin

Mainly by Moonlight by Josh LanyonMainly by Moonlight by Josh Lanyon

Narrated by Kale Williams

First in a trilogy, Mainly by Moonlight is perhaps a bit lighter than Josh Lanyon’s usual fare, and is a quirky and entertaining story featuring a witch whose life is turned upside down when he is arrested for the murder of a rival. I enjoyed the book when I read it over the summer, and Kale Williams is a narrator I enjoy listening to, so this one is already in my wish list. – Caz

Twice in a Blue Moon by Christina LaurenTwice in a Blue Moon by Christina Lauren

Narrated by Erin Mallon

I’m a fan of both the Christina Lauren writing duo and Erin Mallon so I will be looking pick this one up – BJ

The Grace Year by Kim LiggettThe Grace Year by Kim Liggett

Narrated by Emily Shaffer

I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about The Grace Year for months now. It’s a YA dystopian novel with an unconventional romance, and I’m so excited to listen to it. Both the author and narrator are new to me, but I’m planning to get lost in this particular book as soon as I possibly can. – Shannon

Lush MoneyLush Money by Angelina M. Lopez by Angelina M. Lopez

Narrated by Scarlette Hayes

Scarlette Hayes is new to me and doesn’t have many recording credits to her name, but this sounds interesting so I’m going to risk it! – Kaetrin

Deal MakerDeal Maker by Lily Morton by Lily Morton

Narrated by Joel Leslie

Book two in Lily Morton’s Mixed Messages series, this is one of my most hotly anticipated audiobooks of the month (if not the year!) Joel Leslie gave a barnstorming performance in book one (Rule Breaker), imbuing it with the perfect mixture of snark and sexy, and I’m sure he’ll be just as good this time around. I can’t wait to listen! – Caz

The Giver of Stars by Jojo MoyesThe Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes

Narrated by Julia Whelan

I  was lucky enough to read an advanced copy of this historical novel set in 1930s Kentucky, and everything about it was fantastic! It’s a powerhouse of a story about a group of packhorse librarians dedicated to delivering books to people living in some of Kentucky’s remotest communities. The writing is beautiful, and Julia Whelan’s skilled narration is sure to add an extra level of enjoyment to the experience. – Shannon

Child's Play by Danielle SteelChild’s Play by Danielle Steele

Narrated by Dan John Miller

This blurb for this women’s fiction title by Danielle Steele caught my attention: “The lessons are children teach us are the hardest ones. “What do we do when our children don’t pursue our hopes for them?” I’m thinking of trying something different this October and this title may just be the fix I’m looking for. – BJ
