I finished up Arctic Heat by Annabeth Albert, narrated by Iggy Toma. It wasn’t my favorite story, and I didn’t like Toma’s voice for Quill. He sounded emotionless and almost robotic. No big, though, because I usually enjoy Albert’s books and Toma is still a favorite of mine.
I listened to The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt, narrated by Moira Quirk. I’d read the story before, years ago, and it’s entertaining. Quirk’s narration is wonderful and definitely enhanced my enjoyment.
Tight Quarters by Annabeth Albert, narrated by Greg Boudreaux, was next and I loved this book. It’s perhaps my favorite so far of a really good series.
Lastly was Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes, narrated by Julia Whelan. I would categorize this as Women’s Fiction with romantic elements, because while the romance is important,it is definitely not front and center. I had trouble connecting with Evvie, who was a fairly passive character for so much of the book. She allows everyone in her small town to believe sh’s grieving for her emotionally abusive husband (a town favorite), even her best friend. She’s feeling guilty because she’s just glad to be free, but thinks she can’t tell anyone. It’s sometimes humorous, sometimes uncomfortable, and mostly well-written, and has some great things to say about how our society views women. I just couldn’t really connect with Evvie even though I realize a lot of her actions and reactions are trauma responses. Whelan’s narration was close to perfect.
Tight Quarters is probably my favourite book of that series – and Greg B’s performance is wonderful. The scene where Bacon turns up unexpectedly and is a wreck after his most recent mission has stayed with me ever since. I’ve soft spots for At Attention and Squared Away, too.
