Another weekend is almost upon us – maybe you’ll find some inspiration for a weekend listen from this week’s Currently Playing.
Here’s what the Gals are listening to this week.

I started The Wallflower Wager by Tessa Dare, narrated by Mary Jane Wells earlier this week but I had little time to listen due to life. Then I found I wasn’t interested in picking it back up. At least not right now. I love Mary Jane Well’s narration, and the book has funny moments, but it failed to really grab me before I got distracted. I decided to take a few days break from audiobooks because life got a little crazy for a while.
Right now I’m listening to Pop Star by Eden Finley, narrated by Iggy Toma. I forgot that this book has a character from Hat Trick which I haven’t listened to yet. I wish I’d done them in order, but since this is a check out on Hoopla, I’ll continue on. I’m enjoying it and I always like Iggy Toma’s narrations.
I think MJW is terrific – I recently did a re-listen of Silence for the Dead by Simone St. James with my eldest – she really enjoyed it too. She’s also narrated St. James’ The Other Side of Midnight, which I’d also recommend if you haven’t already listened to it.
Eden Finley’s Fake Boyfriend series is fun; Hat Trick is the last one but the first, Fake Out is my favourite. Harley in Pop Star is a much nicer guy than he was in Hat Trick, but IIRC, we do get to find out why.
I’m on a mystery kick and am currently gobbling up Iona Whishaw’s Lane Winslow mysteries narrated by Marilla Wex, which take place in a small town in western Canada after WW2. There’s a nice slow burn romance between ex-British Intelligence Lane and the local inspector.
Caz, I am curious how you like “Honey From the Lion” – that one looks good to me – plus Greg Boudreaux is so wonderful.
Greg is, indeed, wonderful :) I enjoyed Honey From the Lion a lot – it’s a sweet slow-burn with likeable characters. I’ve bought the previous book (Heroes For Ghosts) on the strength of it. I hope the rest of the series will follow in due course.
Caz, I really appreciate your reviews. I listened to Heroes For Ghosts and Honey From the Lion and really enjoyed both – a sweet slow burn for sure. (then I read a couple others in the series and didn’t love them as much though, maybe a big part of the appeal was Boudreaux, but I also don’t often like it when every friend gets their own book, it felt too forced here).
So then I went to your best of 2020 list and realized I’d listened to 7 out of 11 and would count them as my favourites too – clearly you are a reliable source for me! I am going to give the 4 left a go – starting with the Gregory Ashe!
Thanks for doing what you do!
Liz
Aw, thank you – I love knowing my ramblings and recommendations are useful!
Greg Boudreaux is always a big draw :)
Gregory Ashe is one of my favourite authors, but the angst factor is pretty high, so be prepared! Probably his best known (and loved) series is Hazard and Somerset, which is now at eleven books, with a new series starting in October. The narrator isn’t one of my favourites; I did listen to most of the first series, but I stuck to print for the second. Charlie David and J.F Harding are excellent in Borealis and The Lamb and the Lion/First Quarto however.
Come back and let me know how you get on!!
