This week I finished Any Old Diamonds (Lilywhite Boys #1) by KJ Charles and encountered a character from from the Sins in the City trilogy, so I circled back to finish that (I’d only listened to the first one). That trilogy is available with Audible Plus, which is nice. I loved An Unnatural Vice and An Unsuitable Heir very much, and Matthew Lloyd Davies does his usual masterful job as narrator. I especially admire how well he keeps his character voices consistent throughout the series. By the final book he has quite a cast of characters, yet he keeps them all distinct. I have A Gilded Cage (Lilywhite Boys #2) waiting in the wings.

    Right now I’m listening to Gideon by Lily Morton, narrated by Joel Leslie. When I read this book it was perhaps my least favorite of her books, which is why I’ve waited the longest to listen to this on audio. I’m not sure why I’m enjoying it more this time. Of course Joel Leslie does a wonderful job, but it’s more than just a good narration. Listing to the audiobook has helped humanize Gideon for me. Joel puts a lot of believable emotion into his voice acting and I feel more empathy for Gideon this time around. I’ll probably bring my grade up this time around,and not only for the narration,but for my new appreciation of the story.

    1. KJC sold audio rights to a few books (four?) to Tantor a few years ago, and with one exception (Unfit to Print with Vikas Adam), they screwed it up by using narrators who just weren’t good enough for the material. It breaks my heart not to listen to Spectred Isle and Think of England :(

      I can only assume the author was similarly unhappy as everything of hers they’ve released since has been narrated by Cornell Collins/MLD. I’m hoping the two “Doomsday” books (that’s her working title, I think!) KJC is writing for Sourcebooks will make it to audio next year – AND that if they don’t use MLD, they use someone equally good.

      I think Gideon is the one LM book I haven’t listened to yet! I must get on that… One of the many things I love about audio is just what you describe. It’s wonderful when the performer can bring that sort of illumination to characters and story.
