Just finished the Long Game! Loved getting to see how Shane and Ilya’s story went, though I found myself getting pretty frustrated with Shane.
Now I’m an hour into the new Cat and Bones. Given that the original series was my gateway drug into audiobooks, it feels very full circle. And I do like Will Watt’s narration skills, so am feeling pretty excited for the listen.
It’s been so long since I read the Cat and Bones books that I wonder if I need a refresher before reading the new one. I’m glad the narrator is good!
I was getting frustrated with Shane,as well, but I think it’s a pretty accurate portrayal of how narrow one’s focus can get. And I had to remember that Ilya was being very closed-mouthed about his struggles. At least Shane recognized his wrongheadedness pretty quickly when confronted. I thought that confrontation scene was one of the best in the book. Very powerful.
Fair point on Ilya’s reticence. I just felt so badly for him, upending his life and career and giving up so much for Shane, while Shane did not seem to truly comprehend or appreciate it. Definitely agree with the power of the confrontation scene. Overall, I liked the book and think I’ll be listening to it again. It was so interesting to see the same events that have happened in previous stories (the team dog, the airplane incident) through the lens of Shane and Ilya’s journey.
Between my book hangover after The Long Game and dealing with covid, I haven’t listened to anything new recently. Right now I’m finishing up a relisten to an old Nora Robert’s book, High Noon, narrated by Susan Ericksen. Not a masterpiece, but entertaining and not demanding. :-)
