This week I’ve done a lot of comfort relistening, but did manage to finish a couple of new books.
Jack: Grime and Punishment by Z.A. Maxfield, narrated by Joe Arden. I was underwhelmed by the story and the narration. Arden was good, but his narrative passages felt very flat.
Must Love Demons by Meghan Manslow, narrated by Darcy Stark. This should have been right in my wheelhouse, but fell a little flat for me. B- for the story. I think this is the first time I’ve listened to Darcy Stark. While Stark has some clever character voices (I didn’t like Flame’s voice, though–he was supposed to be sexy, but sounded like an very old man), I felt his narrative passages were sometimes bland.
Right now I’m listening to The Other Side of Midnight by Simone St. James, narrated by Mary Jane Wells. Excellent writing and narration. this is my June TBR Challenge for “After The War.”
I loved the two St. James books MJW narrated – Silence For the Dead is really good, too.
The Maslow worked better for me than you – I really like Darcy Stark, but he’s at his best in the Diversion series, which is fantastic all round and I highly recommend it.
I’ve been seriously considering the Diversion series after reading your reviews. And I liked Darcy Stark enough to want to try him again on something different. I finished the St. James book and thought it was great. The Other Side of Midnight was more suspense than scary and that suited me. My husband just read The Sun-Down Hotel and told me not to try it–too scary. :-) What about Silence for the Dead? Scary or more suspense than scary?
I reviewed The Sun Down Motel here – I wouldn’t have said it was all that scary! It’s creepy and atmospheric for sure, and there are some spooky moments, but it’s not scream-your-head-off-and-leap-behind-the-sofa frightening!
The same is true of Silence for the Dead (which I reviewed at AAR) – I don’t think any of the author’s books are what I’d term scary.
You’re no help, then! Haha! My husband wasn’t scared, but he felt like I wouldn’t enjoy it. I’ll get him to read Silence for the Dead. He really enjoyed the two he’s read by St. James so it’s no hardship, and he knows my limitations! Thank you! :-)
