I’m listening to Under a Dark Moon by Stella Riley, narrated by Alex Wyndham. I read this when it was released on Kindle and liked it, and got the audiobook on sale last summer. I’m almost finished, and while this series may not be her best, Riley not at her best is still very good. Good character development, interesting history and some action makes this a fun time. Wyndham does a nice job with the narration. I’m going to go ahead and get her third of the series, The Montesoro Legacy, on audio soon. I have The King’s Falcon from her Roundheads and Cavaliers series and may tackle that next.
I used to love Alex Wyndham’s narrations until he started to do something weird and breathy with his voice. I haven’t listened to him in a while though, so maybe he’s thought better of it and gone back to normal! I really like the English Civil War series – and A Splendid Defiance remains one of my all-time HR favourites. I read it first in the mid-80s, and even though I somehow lost my copy, the story and characters stayed with me.
My husband recently finished reading The Black Madonna and was so impressed by her writing and knowledge. He’s now going to buy the rest of the series on Kindle (I have them on audio, or at least the ones available). That series is amazing.
It’s been a while since I listened to some of Wyndam’s earlier narrations, but I didn’t think the breathiness was much of an issue while listening to Under a Dark Moon. I actually had that in mind when I started it. He did some voices in a whispery way, but not the narrative parts or the main characters, I don’t think. I hope so, because The King’s Falcon is over 20 hours and that could be distracting! :-)
