The Wrong Billionaire’s Bed is a fun, erotic romance novel where the average-looking, responsible, straight-laced heroine ends up finding her HEA in the most unlikely of places: a playboy billionaire. The only question is which one! If you love stories where opposites attract, this is a pleasing one to add to your list. While the plot is fairly predictable, Jessica Clare does a nice job of weaving together witty banter and hot passionate scenes with an underlying story about childhood friends and a circle of billionaire buddies and Jillian Macie helps bring it all to life with her talented narration.
The Billionaire Boys Club is a group of six billionaires who have made a secret pact to help each other achieve financial success. Along the way to that goal, they inevitably end up involved in each others paths towards finding love too. Although all six of the billionaires play some part in The Wrong Billionaire’s Bed, this third book primarily focuses on Cade Archer and Reese Durham. The prior books, while helpful, are not necessary to an understanding of this installment.
Cade Archer has been friends with the Petty twins, Audrey and Daphne, since they were kids. Audrey has always had a crush on him, but after a failed kiss at the tender age of 13, she chose to hide her feelings and instead perfect her attentive, caretaker ways, in a bid to wait until the right opportunity to pursue him again when she will be able to impress him with how right she is for taking care of him. When her super skinny, beautiful, rock star twin, who has been struggling with a drug addiction, needs a secluded place to detox, fate steps in, and Cade offers to entertain the sisters at his remote mountain cabin.
Upon her arrival, however, Audrey is shocked to find Cade’s best friend, Reese Durham, at the cabin with a billionaire heiress. Audrey does her best to evict the uninvited couple, in order to keep the paparazzi oblivious to her sister’s retreat, but, to her great chagrin, only manages to oust the heiress. Annoyed by Audrey’s actions, which preclude him from seducing the heiress he views as a precursor to finalizing a much coveted business deal, and quickly noticing her unrequited interest in Cade, Reese decides to stick around and do a little needling of his own. But what initially starts as teasing, turns into a very surprising physical attraction and numerous torrid rendezvous. Can an average girl like Audrey ever hold a man like Reese’s attention for long? Moreover, if Cade finally decides to give Audrey a chance, what will Audrey do?
Jillian Macie appears to be a relatively new narrator with only seven titles, including three from this series, to her name. Nonetheless, I thought she rendered a relatively talented performance with a style that somewhat reminded me of Amy Rubinate, a narrator I generally enjoy.
Ms. Macie’s voice is naturally high pitched and younger sounding, which makes her particularly suited for young adult titles. While this is not in that genre, and Ms. Macie’s male renditions are somewhat higher than most men’s to be completely believable, she did a good job of providing subtly differentiated characterizations for Cade and Reese. Cade comes across as the sweet, conscientious, protective man that he is supposed to be while Reese is the more playful, teasing rake. Likewise, Ms. Macie’s female depictions are not highly distinguished but just nuanced enough to bring to life Audrey’s responsible, dependable, nicer nature with a slightly, softer sound, compared to Daphne’s somewhat harsher intonation that unquestionably represents her spoiled, more abrasive, no-nonsense quality.
I love underdogs, and Audrey is just the type of heroine you want to see reign victorious at the end of the day. I found it refreshing that Audrey got her chance to “play” the playboy, going in eyes wide open, but nonetheless choosing to indulge in a good time rather than having notions of reforming him or expecting him to change. She is surprisingly realistic in the romantic world of fantasy ideals. I also enjoyed the underlying message that sometimes two flawed individuals can come together and bring out that special magic element in each other and, when they do finally join, their whole is so much better than its parts!
In conclusion, if you’re looking for a light, sexy listen, and you don’t mind a little predictability, The Wrong Billionaire’s Bed may be just what you’re looking for.
